What to Look for in a Care Center for Your Aging Parents

Caring for aging parents is an experience in role reversals as you learn to take care of people who once took care of you. Circumstances may dictate, however, that you hand over care responsibilities to a care center. Choosing a good care center can make a huge difference in the quality of life your parents experience. So what should you be looking for?

Types of Facilities

There are different types of care facilities available to take care of aging parents. The type best suited to your parents will be dependent on their needs. Do they need a facility that offers memory care? How mobile are they? Are they still fairly independent? What level of care do they need? Do they need palliative, medical, or hospice care? Once you have a clear understanding of your parents’ needs, you’ll be better equipped to select an appropriate care facility for them. Keep in mind that your parents may have different levels of needs, so you’ll need to balance that when selecting the facility.

Health Treatment Methods

Different facilities will have different approaches to treatments, especially when it comes to cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s. If you have a parent who suffers from Alzheimer’s, try to find a facility that has the capacity to support their needs. Those who have Alzheimer’s tend to become easily confused and may wander off, so having a secure area where they will be safe is important. Consider what treatments are available as well, keeping in mind that there is no cure. Traditional Alzheimer’s treatments rely on pharmaceutical care solutions. Ask if the facility supports holistic treatment methods as well, since they may be beneficial in improving quality of life.

Evaluating for Quality

Not all care facilities are created equal when it comes to quality.. When selecting one for your parents, keep an eye out for indicators of what the quality of the facility is like. Take a tour with your parents. Are the residents and staff happy? What does the facility smell like? Is it clean? Take a look at the reviews for the center when you are home. Evaluate them and your experience on the tour for any care facility red flags. If you notice any, you may want to choose a different care center.

It’s important to choose a high quality care center to look after your aging parents. Consider the type of facility that would be most suited to caring for their needs. What treatment methods are available? Make sure you have an eye for quality. This will help you choose a center that will help keep your parents safe and happy in this last chapter of their lives.
