How to Keep Your Driveway in Good Condition Year Round

Keeping your driveway from being damaged by the natural elements and other dangerous factors is a year-round job, especially in places like Idaho where the seasons (and especially the winter weather) can be extreme. Make sure you are taking these steps in order to protect your driveway during each season.

Spring and Summer

Spring and summer are transition seasons, meaning they are a good time for making repairs or prepping for summer and winter. If winter snowfall has caused any damage—cracks, sinkholes, or other signs of wear—to your driveway, spring is a great time to repair or replace any areas of issue. Now is the time to seal and edge the substrate in order to minimize the possibilities of further problems. Give your driveway a good cleaning, and consider applying sealer to concrete or pavement driveways.

Summer

Summer is a time to get the most use out of your driveway, whether that means playing games or washing your car. Still, it is important to protect your driveway during the summer. Be aware of several problems which can arise during the summer, and be ready to resolve them as quickly as possible.

Watch out for plant growth—grass or other weeds can infiltrate your driveway’s seams and cause damage. Weed out plant growth quickly and regularly in order to protect your driveway from damage to the substrate.

You’ll also want to keep in mind the effects of the higher temperatures. Asphalt driveways, for example, tend to retain a lot of heat, and increased heat, coupled with decreased moisture, makes it easier for car oil and cleaning chemicals to stain your driveway. If you notice staining beginning to occur, wash your driveway right away with a high-powered hose.

Winter

Prevention is the key to keeping your driveway in good condition during the winter, so be sure to start your winter preparation early. Winter conditions can cause damage, including water damage, to your driveway. Before winter comes, make sure your driveway is clean, weeded, and sealed.

It is important to prevent water damage that may come from the melting snow. Snow removal is an important step, but plowing or shoveling can cause damage by scraping your drive if you are not careful. Think ahead about how you plan to get rid of snow when it arrives, and then clear the snow regularly to prevent standing water from accumulating and damaging the driveway.

Driveway upkeep is a year-round task, with different chores coming in handy in the different seasons. Be vigilant throughout the year and your driveway will be protected against the harsh elements even during the toughest winter.
