How Climate Change Will Impact Homeowners

Climate change can seem overwhelming sometimes. While it is so real, it can sometimes feel difficult to know how it affects you personally. But being aware of the effects of climate change on you as a homeowner can help you make informed decisions when you do your home maintenance.

Extreme Weather

No matter where you live, climate change can bring more extreme weather conditions more frequently. For example, if you live in a location prone to hurricanes, climate change raises the temperature of the air. When the warmer water becomes mixed with the cold water, more violent hurricanes ensue.

In other areas with dryer climates not near the ocean, the rise in earth’s temperature will result in more wildfires which can often have catastrophic results for homeowners when homes are burned down.

More Pests

Climate change may cause some insect populations to increase dramatically. Climate change does this by doing two things. First, when temperatures rise, insects tend to be able to digest food faster which means that they can consume and destroy important crops faster as well. Second, rising temperatures could also result in making it easier for cold blooded insects to reproduce quicker.

As insects eat more and reproduce faster, insect populations will grow exponentially, and we’ll see a rise in resource depletion. As a homeowner, it’s important that you think about important pest control strategies now so that you can keep pests at bay.

Higher Risk

Generally, one of the main ways that climate change affects homeowners is simply in the added risk that comes with owning a house. Though climate change isn’t something that happens rapidly, it’s essential that you be aware of the effects of climate change and how they can affect you in order for you to prepare against them.

For starters, analyze the landscape surrounding your home. Are you in a flood-zone? Are you in an area that could be affected by wildfires? To what pests is your property vulnerable? Thinking about these questions and figuring out specific strategies to address the problems that could come up if you were to have a flood or a pest invasion for example will help you be prepared.

Climate change can sometimes seem like an ambiguous force that slowly changes our home planet. But even though climate change happens at rate imperceptible from day to day, it can still have a big effect on you as a homeowner. Think specifically about the different climate risks your house could be subject to and then make a plan.
