How Can You Easily Add Storage to Your Home?

Some people have homes that have become a little snug as their families have expanded, and other people simply have too many things. It’s very common for people to want to expand upon the amount of storage that they already have or add a completely different kind of storage unit, and there are actually many places in your home and on your property that you can use to increase your storage space.

First Just Try Cleaning

You would be amazed by the amount of storage that you can free up simply by cleaning things out and adding the right storage techniques. For instance, if you have a closet that’s overflowing with things, pull everything out and really think about how you have everything organized. Are all of the extra blankets and pillows in the spare closet grouped together? You should also consider using space-saving techniques like putting extra pillows and blankets in vacuum-sealed storage bags.

Consider Your Yard

If you’re short on square footage in your home, consider the amount of space that you have in your yard. There are low-cost, easy-to-install storage structures that you can add to your backyard or an extra-wide lot. For instance, there are advantages to modular garages if you don’t have much time or a large budget to construct a built-in garage. This type of garage is delivered to your home already assembled. The only thing that you need to do beforehand is laying a foundation. Then, once the garage is there, it takes one or two days to fasten it to the foundation. In this type of garage, you can store all of the items that you would normally store in a traditional garage, and you might even double the amount of storage space that you have, depending on how much you have inside of your home and the size of the garage that you buy. If you attach the garage to the side of your house, you’ll also be able to stop fighting the weather when you store your car inside because you’ll no longer need to brush snow or ice off of your car.

Build Storage in Your Kitchen

The kitchen is one room that you need to pay extra attention to the details when planning out your storage. But changing up a few things can make it so much easier to store all of your appliances and tools and reach them easily when you need them. For instance, if you’re interested in having more room for food, you’ll need to look at the available space that you have in and around your kitchen. Can you bump out a wall into a large laundry room so that you have enough space for a pantry? If you like to stock up on certain freezer items when there are sales, you can also see if you can add wiring to an existing walk-in pantry so that you can add a second freezer. There are many adjustments that you can make to your kitchen that can be completed in a weekend and won’t cost as much as a full kitchen remodel.

Make Under-the-Bed Storage

If you want storage that doesn’t take up more square footage in your bedroom, consider under-the-bed storage. You can purchase a bed that has storage built into it, or you can buy the drawer system separately. Another option is to buy plastic storage containers that fit underneath your bed. This is a great option if you’re looking for a storage solution on a very tight budget. You can store your winter sweaters and duvets that you want to keep nearby in case it gets cold. You can even put extra shoes or memorabilia that you want to stay safe and dry.

Add Vertical Storage in Bathrooms

You might be one of those lucky people who have a large bathroom with plenty of storage space, but if your bathroom is a little cramped, you might need to use every square inch that you have. For instance, you might need to use vertical space. If you have even an extra foot of space on the floor of your bathroom, you can consider building a small closet for all of your medicines, extra toilet paper, cotton balls, hair products and everything else that you would like to keep in your bathroom.

Install Shelves and Built-In Furniture in Your Living Room

If you’re thinking about how you can add storage space to your living room, consider adding some shelves. If you’re concerned about using up square footage in a living room that’s already a bit cramped, try putting the shelves up high. These types of shelves can be a great place to keep books, memorabilia, plants, or even blankets and pillows. If you want some things to be within easy reach, you can also install some shelves or built-in furniture. You can install built-in shelves into walls that aren’t bearing a load, and they don’t take up any room. And if you don’t want to put in the time to build your own bookshelves, reduce the amount of effort with pre-built shelves and drawers.

Buy Furniture With Storage Space

If you’re looking for places to store children’s toys, blankets, hobby supplies, and other odds and ends, put your furniture to work in multiple ways. Footstools, ottomans, and benches can serve multiple functions when you make the seat into a lid. This is a great option for your mudroom bench, which can store your kids’ coats and mittens. It’s also a smart solution for living rooms that are beginning to look cluttered with all of the items that you want nearby but not necessarily insight. You can buy an ottoman or bench at a store, or you can make your own ottoman.

Reclaim Attic Space

If you have an attic that you don’t often use because access is inconvenient, install a drop-down ladder to make your attic more accessible. Somewhere in your home, you probably have an access point so that you or contractors can get inside the attic for maintenance. If this is the case, installing a ladder and flooring can give you a lot of extra space for items that you only want occasionally.

Many people feel like they’re outgrowing their homes because they don’t have enough storage space. If this is you, think about where you have wasted space and come up with some solutions. Even just one extra storage space of decent size can give you plenty of room to make your house more comfortable and organized.
