How a Personal Retreat Can Help You After a Divorce

Going through a divorce is very trying emotionally, mentally, and financially. It can leave you feeling very drained and not very hopeful for the future. In order to make the process easier, you may want to consider a personal retreat after a divorce. A retreat is an excellent way to get away for a while and focus on yourself before you move forward.

Finding Yourself Again

While in a difficult marriage and while going through a divorce, it’s easy to lose sight of yourself. All your energy is spent on external forces and you don’t have much time to think of yourself. A personal retreat can give you this time. You can begin to reflect on your life. According to Zen Habits, reflection is a very powerful tool that can help you understand yourself better. It helps you to learn from past mistakes and it helps you make connections between your memories, thoughts, feelings, and more. On your personal retreat, experiment with different methods of reflection to help you find yourself again.

Finding Peace

Divorces are very stressful. According to the Law Offices of Patricia Rigdon, litigation is the most stressful way to resolve divorce proceedings, since you end up pitted against your spouse in court. During a divorce, you may feel like your life is chaotic or in turmoil. Part of a personal retreat is finding peace. You can get away from the stressful situation and just focus on yourself. While going through your divorce, it’s likely you were focused both on the past and the future. On your retreat, take time to focus on the present. Live in the moment and be mindful. Try plenty of relaxing activities such as yoga or meditation to help center this focus. Being mindful of the present moment can help you be more aware of your surroundings. It can also help you feel more at peace because you aren’t focused on other things. It’s all about right now.

Finding a New Direction

A divorce can severely uproot the plans you had for your life and you may be left feeling lost. While on your retreat, according to Second Saturday, it may be helpful to make a plan. While reflecting and being mindful, you can clear your mind in order to make the best decisions for yourself. You can determine what steps will be most helpful to you. Maybe a job change? Or perhaps moving somewhere new? Many other things in your life are already changing, so what’s one more change? You can even start with small changes like a new haircut. Whatever you decide, it can be helpful to use this time on your own to make a plan for when your retreat is over. This can help to ease your transition.

A personal retreat can be very beneficial to you after your divorce, especially in regard to your mental health. You can have some time away from all the stress as you begin to reflect on yourself. You can work through your emotions, center yourself, and create a plan for when you move forward. You’ve been through a lot and you deserve some time on your own.
