Buying a Gun? What You Should Know First

As a hardworking citizen of America, you have the right to protect yourself. With all the crime that goes on nowadays, it’s no wonder so many people have bought guns. If you are thinking of becoming a new gun owner, then you may have many questions. Here are a few things that you need to think about before you spend your hard-earned money on a weapon.

Permit Requirements

Different states have different requirements when it comes to acquiring a gun permit. According to federal law, you must be at least 18 to buy rifles and shotguns and 21 to buy all other types of guns. People who have committed felonies and served more than one year in jail, as well as individuals who have committed a misdemeanor and served more than two years in prison, cannot get a permit under federal law. If you have been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility, then you cannot own a firearm. Additionally, those who have been found guilty of processing drugs in the last year cannot own a gun. That still leaves a lot of people who can own guns. There are 17.25 million concealed carry permits in the United States, so you definitely wouldn’t be the only one. The application process to get your gun permit varies by state, but it usually takes under 72 hours.

Where You Will Keep the Gun

You also need to know where you will keep the gun once you purchase it. Plastic and soft-sided cases are usually not a good solution because they can easily be destroyed even if they are padlocked. If you are thinking of carrying your gun in public with you often, then consider options with a trigger lock. These locks that are available in several different styles prevent the weapon from accidentally discharging and require someone to know how to take the trigger lock off before using the gun. Strongboxes are a good choice because they have technology built into them that makes it harder for someone to get inside the box and use the weapon. The most secure place to keep a gun is in a heavy gun safe.

Gun Safety Basics

You can own all types of guns, but if you do not know how they work, then they can become hazardous toys. The best way to avoid hurting yourself (or anyone else) is to take a gun safety course before making a purchase so you can be familiar with standard gun safety practices. Afterward, go to the range regularly to practice. You will want to be prepared if something goes awry and requires you to use your gun to protect yourself or your loved ones.

While owning a gun is a great way to protect yourself, having one is a big responsibility. Keeping these three ideas in mind will help you decide if gun ownership is for you. Once you’ve done your research and considered these things, contact a registered dealer so you can bring your new gun home and be ready for any threat that may come your way.
