Where You Should Move If You Have a Dog

For many people, a dog is part of their family just as much as a child is. Because of this, it’s important to take your dog into consideration when choosing somewhere to move. Some places are more dog-friendly than others, so it’s not like you can just move anywhere and expect things to work out as they have in the past. So where is a good place to move if you have a dog?

An Urban Area

Despite the lack of open space that tends to be typical of urban areas, they can actually be surprisingly dog-friendly. In fact, many of the top 50 pet-friendly cities in the US are thriving metropolises. It turns out that just because the downtown scenery is all hustle and bustle, they can be decent places for dogs too. Many cities have dog parks you can take your dog to where they can socialize and play in a designated area. Before you take your dog to a park, make sure you are familiar with the rules and that you don’t forget any outing essentials.

A Pet-Friendly Home

Of course, it isn’t enough to just think about the town or city you’ll move to. You need to take the actual home itself into consideration. There are multiple factors that go into making a home pet-friendly. Consider floors, for example. Hard floors can prevent damage from pets that’s common with carpet. If you have hardwood floors, specifically, keep an eye on your dog’s nails. If they get too long they may end up scratching your floor. If you can land a home with a fenced in yard, that’s even better. You’ll be able to let your dog spend some time outside to play and get some energy out.

Rural Areas

Speaking of going outside, have you considered a rural area? The complete opposite of an urban area, rural areas can be excellent if your dog needs lots of space. Larger dogs need more exercise than smaller ones, so having lots of space to run around in can be beneficial. Keep in mind though, that most dogs are happiest outside when they are playing with others. If left to their own devices for too long they may get bored and find something to amuse themselves with. Odds are good that whatever they choose may very well land them in trouble. For everyone’s safety, it’s best for you to be out with them.

Dogs are wonderful animals who deserve to be considered as their owners choose a new home for the family. Think about the needs of your dog and the rest of your household when choosing both a home and location to live. Finding something that works for everyone is the best way to make your new home feel like just that—a home.
