Emergency Pediatrician Dr. Louis Hampers Exceeds Expectations At Every Turn

Described as talented, focused, passionate, engaging, and energetic, Dr. Louis Hampers has spent his career working tirelessly as an Emergency Pediatrician. Known for always putting his patients and his staff before himself, Dr. Hampers has earned acclaim throughout the medical community. Between his clinical work, groundbreaking research, years of teaching, and leadership in administrative roles, Dr. Hampers has been able to influence all aspects of medicine.

From the start, Dr. Louis Hampers intended to be a physician. His father was both a kidney specialist and a skilled businessman, helping to transform American healthcare by providing high-quality, low-cost, kidney dialysis and investing in cutting-edge medical technologies. The elder Hampers founded and led the world’s largest and most successful provider of dialysis services and products. His incredible example of both innovation and philanthropy was enough to inspire all of his three sons to pursue medical degrees.

A Legacy of Helping Patients

Dr. Louis Hampers was deeply inspired by his father’s dedication to his profession, and also possessed the academic aptitude to find success as a physician. He was accepted to Dartmouth College for his undergraduate degree, where he graduated magna cum laude. At his father’s suggestion, he enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Wharton School and earned a dual MD/MBA.

Having always assumed that he would go into Internal Medicine like his father before him, Dr. Lou Hampers was shocked to find that Pediatrics won his heart. However, his Pediatrics rotation was his first during medical school, and he was determined to experience all specialties before committing to one as a career.

Specialty training in the U.S. had changed since his father had studied in the 1950s, and Dr. Lou Hampers longed for prolonged exposure to all types of medicine. He decided to volunteer one year of his life as a Medical Officer at the Presbyterian Church of East Africa Chogoria Hospital in Kenya in the mid-1990s.

How Working in Kenya Changed Dr. Louis Hampers

Working in Kenya as one of two doctors in a 400-bed hospital challenged Dr. Louis Hampers in ways that he never could have expected. He sometimes worked 48-hour shifts, and at times was responsible for all 400 beds. He was called on to perform every function that a hospital required, including blood transfusions, Cesarean sections, and trauma surgeries. The work was both overwhelming and immensely rewarding. Dr. Hampers returned home to the U.S. a changed man, and much more confident in his abilities.

For Dr. Louis Hampers, one of the greatest takeaways from that year in Kenya was his predilection for the ER; he decided to pursue Emergency Pediatrics over primary care pediatrics. He completed his Fellowship training at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he also researched the effect of language barriers on medical care. His research on the topic has been cited hundreds of times and has influenced hospitals nationwide to provide interpreters at every opportunity where there might be a benefit to the patient.

After his time in Chicago, Dr. Louis Hampers found a professional home at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and at the Children’s Hospital of Colorado. He continued to climb the ranks at both, becoming an Associate Professor at the former, and the Medical Director of the Emergency Department and Section Head of the Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the latter.

Performing two full-time positions, teaching, and seeing patients came naturally to Dr. Hampers, who works quickly and brings high energy to all of his undertakings. He maintained his position as a professor for more than a decade.

How Lou Hampers Donates his Time Now

Most recently, during the Covid-19 epidemic, Dr. Louis Hampers donated his time to a general urgent care clinic, where he was able to work closely with families once again. Being back on the front lines facing daily crises was somewhat of a homecoming for Dr. Hampers.

During his long and prosperous career, Dr. Hampers has contributed greatly to the field of medicine. He has completed extensive research on the topics of language barriers in medicine, variation in physician practice patterns, urgent care and fast-track medicine, febrile seizures, tropical medicine, and substance abuse treatment. He has influenced hundreds of practitioners as a skilled educator. His clinical work has saved and extended lives for more than 20 years. And as a hospital administrator, he has led by example, ushering patients to the forefront of priority time and time again. Dr. Louis Hampers currently resides in Centennial, CO.
