For roughly half a century, air forces accepted a frustrating trade-off. An aircraft could listen to the electromagnetic spectrum or it could scream into it, but not both on the same sortie. Israel Aerospace Industries just told the world that trade-off is over. At Farnborough on July 20, the state-owned manufacturer unveiled the IAI Ellyon, a converted business jet that gathers intelligence and jams enemy radar simultaneously, from stand-off ranges measured in hundreds of kilometers, according to Aviation Week and Ynetnews.
Ellyon is Hebrew for “God Most High.” IAI is not being subtle about the claim it is staking. Built by the company’s ELTA Systems division and based on the Bombardier Global 6500, the aircraft carries no weapons at all. Its entire purpose is to own the invisible part of the battlefield, the part where modern air defense networks live or die.
What IAI Ellyon Actually Does
Strip away the marketing and the IAI Ellyon performs two jobs that have historically required two separate airframes.
The first is ISTAR: intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance. Ellyon carries signals intelligence receivers, a long-range synthetic aperture radar with ground moving target indication, electro-optical sensors, and wide-band satellite communications. That package lets it map an operating environment, track vehicles moving across it, and push imagery and cuts back to commanders in real time.
The second is electronic attack. Ellyon jams across the full spectrum. Radar. Communications. GNSS. All three at once, according to Breaking Defense. Airborne systems and ground-based systems alike, including the integrated air defense networks that tie radar and communication nodes into a single kill web. The company says it can run multiple jamming operations at once rather than picking a target and committing.
Doing both at once is genuinely hard. The engineering problem is embarrassingly simple to state: it is difficult to hear a whisper when you are the loudest object in the sky. Solving it required miniaturized sensors, advanced signal-processing algorithms, and enough onboard compute to separate your own emissions from everyone else’s in real time.
What Is Inside the IAI Ellyon Mission Suite
IAI has disclosed the shape of the payload even while withholding the numbers that matter to an opposing air force. What the company has confirmed breaks down into five blocks:
- Signals intelligence receivers that classify and locate hostile emitters across a wide band
- A long-range synthetic aperture radar with ground moving target indication for mapping terrain and tracking vehicles
- Electro-optical sensors for visual confirmation of what the radar and the SIGINT suite have flagged
- A full-spectrum electronic attack package covering radar, communications and GNSS, effective against airborne and ground-based systems
- Wide-band satellite communications plus a self-protection suite of threat detection, warning systems and electronic countermeasures
Read as a list, that is an unusual amount of capability for an airframe with no weapons and a cabin originally designed for corporate travel. Each block on its own exists elsewhere in the market. The Israeli argument is that nobody else has put all five into one fuselage and made them coexist without deafening each other.
The AI Mission Manager Is the Real Product
The airframe gets the headlines. The software is what militaries will actually pay for.
At the center of the IAI Ellyon sits an AI-based mission management system that fuses inputs from every sensor on board, generates intelligence assessments, and transmits them by satellite to command centers, ground stations and other aircraft. IAI designed the platform around shortening what militaries call the intelligence loop: detect a threat, analyze the information, enable a response.
Compress that loop and you change what an air campaign looks like. A radar that lights up, gets classified, gets jammed, and gets handed off as a target within the same orbit is a fundamentally different problem than one that requires three aircraft, two ground stations, and a planning cycle.
“ELLYON continues this legacy by integrating advanced intelligence collection, electronic attack and AI-driven mission management into a single platform,” said Boaz Levy, Chairman of Israel Aerospace Industries. He framed the aircraft as the newest entry in a lineage stretching back decades through IAI’s airborne early warning work.
Dror Bar, CEO of ELTA Systems and a vice president at IAI, was blunter about the ambition. “ELLYON represents a technological leap forward, combining stand-off operations with the ability to sense, understand and shape the electromagnetic battlespace,” he said. Note the verb. Not monitor. Shape.
Levy went further in remarks reported by Calcalist, tying the aircraft to demand IAI is already struggling to meet. Ellyon “provides a significant operational advantage in evolving combat arenas,” he said, describing a system that “unifies advanced intelligence, electronic warfare and mission management capabilities in a single airborne platform.”
The AI framing is not decoration either. An electronic warfare aircraft that produces raw collection still needs analysts, and analysts need hours. A platform that hands a commander a finished assessment while the target is still emitting is selling time, and time is the scarcest commodity in any air campaign.
Why a Business Jet and Not a Fighter
Executives fly Global 6500s to Davos. Air forces are increasingly flying them to war, and the logic is unglamorous but sound.
Large business jets offer range, high cruising altitude and cabin volume at operating costs far below a converted airliner or a purpose-built military platform. Israel already proved the concept with the G550 Conformal Airborne Early Warning aircraft, in service with both Singapore and Italy. Two export customers for a niche platform is not a small number in this market. A jet that can loiter for hours at altitude, hundreds of kilometers from hostile air defenses, is a better electronic warfare truck than a fast jet that burns fuel and carries two crew.
IAI has also declined to marry the IAI Ellyon to one airframe. The company describes the system as platform-agnostic, installable on several types of large business jets. That is a sales decision as much as an engineering one. A customer that already operates a fleet of Gulfstreams does not want to buy Bombardiers to get the mission system. It also shortens the path to a first delivery, because a customer with suitable aircraft on hand is buying a conversion rather than waiting in line behind every other order at a manufacturer.
Ellyon Is Built to Work With Drones
Buried in IAI’s technical description is a line that matters more than its placement suggests: the setup is designed to enable operations with uncrewed systems.
Read that alongside how Israel actually fights. Loitering munitions and unmanned aircraft do enormous work in Israeli operational concepts, a pattern International Daily Finance covered in IAI’s Palladyne partnership on Harpy and Harop munitions. An airborne node that can suppress air defenses while cueing drone strikes turns Ellyon from a support asset into the hub of a strike package.
The same logic runs in reverse. Israeli forces have spent two years learning what hostile drones do to a defended airspace, and the answer has been expensive, which is why so much Israeli development effort has gone into layered counters such as Elbit’s airborne Iron Beam laser system. An aircraft that can find the ground control stations and jam the links feeding an enemy drone fleet attacks that problem one step earlier than any interceptor does.
Onboard survivability got attention too. Ellyon carries a self-protection suite: threat detection, warning systems, and electronic countermeasures for its own survival. IAI clearly expects it to operate closer to contested airspace than a comfortable stand-off distance implies.
How Combat-Proven Is the IAI Ellyon, Really?
Here the story requires care, and IAI has been careful.
IAI says the individual technologies inside Ellyon have already been tested operationally. It does not say Ellyon has. That is a meaningful gap. The platform was presented as a newly integrated system, joining ELTA’s existing family of intelligence aircraft that serve the Israel Defense Forces and foreign customers. Those predecessors have accumulated real operational history across intelligence gathering, air defense support and strategic missions.
That distinction is the honest version of “combat-proven,” and it cuts both ways. Israeli systems carry a credibility premium precisely because Israeli engineers get feedback loops no peacetime military can replicate. Iron Dome was not perfected in a lab. At the same time, integration is where complex programs die. Proven subsystems in a new architecture is a promise, not a track record.
IAI also disclosed nothing about entry into service, prospective customers, or unit cost. For a program unveiled at a trade show, that silence is conventional. It is also a reminder that the IAI Ellyon is currently a capability offer rather than a delivered capability.
The Competitive Field at Farnborough 2026
Ellyon did not launch into an empty room. Farnborough 2026 has been dense with announcements aimed at the same customers: Lockheed Martin introduced X-Rotor, a directed-energy counterdrone system; Anduril unveiled Thunder; Boeing and MBDA showed the MQ-28 carrying the Meteor missile; and Edgewing outlined engineering plans for GCAP.
What separates Ellyon from that field is category. The others compete on kinetic effects or on airframes. Ellyon competes on spectrum dominance, a segment where the United States fields the EA-18G Growler and where European options are thin. NATO members rebuilding electronic warfare capacity after decades of neglecting it have very few places to shop.
Israel’s export position is strong going in. The country recorded $19.2 billion in defense exports in 2025, and demand for Israeli air defense and sensor technology has run well ahead of production capacity. IAI has been pushing that breadth hard this year, from airborne systems to the naval combat suite behind the company’s Diamond system for frigates.
The Case Against Getting Excited
A dissenting view deserves space, and it comes from inside the Israeli defense press rather than from critics abroad.
Calcalist has reported that Israel’s budget deadlock could freeze interceptor missile orders from Rafael and IAI, a reminder that domestic funding for the sector is not automatic even amid heavy demand. This is the same IAI that signed a $1 billion air defense contract with the Israeli government as the country prepared for possible renewed conflict with Iran. Order books that large do not guarantee a smooth budget line. Export campaigns for special mission aircraft also run long. Sensor-jet programs are typically measured in five-to-ten year sales cycles, and the ones that succeed usually do so because a launch customer commits early. IAI named none.
Politics is the third constraint. Israeli firms have faced access problems at European shows, including being barred from Eurosatory in 2026. A platform whose best customers are European air forces has to survive European politics, not just European competition.
Spectrum Control Moves to the Center of Air Power
Advanced militaries have spent twenty years wiring themselves together with sensors, data links and networked communications. Every one of those links is also an attack surface. Connectivity is now a liability as much as a force multiplier.
The IAI Ellyon is an argument that the next contested domain is not altitude or stealth but the spectrum itself, and that whoever can listen, understand and disrupt inside the same mission holds an advantage that no amount of airframe performance offsets. Israel, having spent two years operating against layered air defenses and drone threats across multiple fronts, has more recent data on that question than almost anyone.
What does the name Ellyon mean?
