How to Move From a House to an Apartment

If you’re moving from a house to an apartment, whether you’re a student going to college or just downsizing, you’re in for a bit of a project. The amount of square footage you’ll be living in will likely decrease dramatically. As such, there are some things you need to do for a successful move.

Downsize Your Possessions

Start by downsizing your possessions. You probably don’t need everything you have, and you won’t have as much room, so it’s a good idea to start getting rid of some things. You may find it beneficial to hold a yard sale to get rid of unnecessary belongings and get a little extra cash at the same time. If you’re having a hard time deciding what to keep and what to let go of, consider the dollar value of each square foot of space compared to the worth of the item. Is that item worth the price of storing it?

Look for Balconies

One of the nice things about apartment life is not having to maintain a yard. The downside of this is that you don’t have a yard to call your own, or a porch to relax on outside. Finding an apartment with a balcony can be a decent alternative though. Balconies can be great for taking breaks if you work from home. You can catch some sun, practice yoga, read a book, or even just take a nap. Alternatively, balconies can be used as extra storage space. Some places regulate what you can and can’t keep on a balcony though, so make sure you understand the rules before placing belongings on it.

Use Space Savers

Speaking of storage space, because it’s relatively quite limited in an apartment, do what you can to maximize the use of what space you do have. If you’re going from a walk-in closet to a smaller closet, maximize your closet space by using every available inch, including your closet door. You can also consider furnishings that do double duty, such as a bed and desk combination. Speaking of beds, a murphy bed can be a good option for maximizing the space in your bedroom when you aren’t sleeping. Feel free to get creative. There are a lot of things you can do to save and maximize a smaller living space.

Whatever the reason for moving from a house to an apartment, you’re in for quite the adjustment. You’ll probably need to find a way to downsize your possessions. Using space savers can be a great say to make the most of your limited space. Finding an apartment with a balcony can help make that adjustment a bit easier, providing you with space to enjoy being outside and potentially additional storage space. Give it a try and see if the transition is a bit easier.
