3 Tips for Caring for Loved Ones as They Age

Aging is a reality of life, and some people age better than others. Some people have great genes that keep them mobile and healthy well into their later years. Others do not, and so they end up with limitations sooner than desired. Then, there are those who have no warning and are affected by incurable and lifelong diseases. Watching a loved one age can be easy or it can be difficult. Here are three tips for caring for loved ones as they age.

Foster Independence

When you are caring for a loved one who is aging, it is very easy to overprotect them. You have to remember to foster as much independence as they can handle. Older adults who can still care for themselves may become resentful if you baby them. At this point in their life, you have to remember they took care of themselves for a long time. It is not a good idea to become overbearing and create resentment. Consider watching them with a protective eye from a distance. Once you begin to notice that they are struggling with their everyday tasks, it is time to begin talking with them about finding solutions that may help them further maintain their independence with a little extra help.

Where to Care for Them

Once you have noticed that your loved one is having difficulty managing everyday tasks and you’ve had a conversation with them, you have to determine if they require medical care more often. If they develop one of the incurable memory loss diseases, for their safety, you have to look into care facilities. Sadly, elder abuse is an unfortunate reality, so you need to make sure anywhere you choose is carefully vetted. If they are dealing with simple mobility issues, it is possible that they can continue living at home with some modifications made to their living space.

Finances

Unfortunately, older adults are targets for financial fraud, and it can come from any direction. Sometimes they are overcharged by the care facility where they live. Other times, it is hackers who find their way into their bank accounts. There are also those who prey on them under the guise of selling them insurance, products or funeral services. So, you are encouraged to help them to monitor their finances to spot any suspicious charges.

Everyone ages differently, so there is no perfect way to navigate this stage in a person’s life.  You just have to do the best you can. To care for a loved one in their later years, remember to stay present and help them to stay healthy and independent.
