What Every Prospective College Student Needs to Do Before Enrolling

Starting college is an exciting transitory experience for so many people. However, it can also come with a lot of anxiety and uncertainty—knowing what to study, where to go, how to pay for it, and how to schedule your time are just the beginning to the long list of stressors for prospective students. Here are a few things that will help you begin your college career with confidence rather than concern!

Look for Programs that Fit Your Interests

You don’t need your major picked and planned before stepping foot on campus. College Vine says it can be extremely helpful, though, to research the programs available to you and what is entailed in them! Find out what kinds of classes involve subjects you are already passionate about and interested in. What kinds of careers could you visualize yourself in? What are your aptitudes? Classes that come naturally to you or that are genuinely interesting will be infinitely more effective and enjoyable for you, which will make your entire college experience significantly more pleasant. Consider consulting a career or academic advisor who can help inform you of the paths that you could thrive in.

Explore Your Financial Aid Options

Secondary education does not come cheap! Look into the funding options you have at your disposal for means of paying for your education. Start with federal funding: Miller-Motte College says that filing your FAFSA application is the first step to getting financial aid for school. In addition, look into scholarships that you qualify for, and even competitions that could grant you funding for your educational pursuits. You may be surprised at the long list of options that exist for financial aid!

Learn How to Manage Time Well

Juggling college courses, a social life, potentially a job, and of course personal rest and relaxation quickly becomes overwhelming when each is fighting for your attention. Before you dive into the hectic expectations and responsibilities of college life, take the time to set your schedule. Prioritize sleep, designate time for important things, and create firm boundaries so that you adhere to your schedule. Road 2 College says balancing these elements of your life will help you do well in all of them, where a lack of control will likely result in doing poorly in all of them!

 

Your college experience is what you make of it. Before enrolling, check on things like financial aid, college programs, and your personal schedule. That way you’ll get the most out of your college education while living a life you enjoy!
