An IDF programming team created a new battlefield mapping system at a recent hackathon hosted by Ben-Gurion University. The demonstration of the “Noked” software showed how the new 3-d battlefield mapping tool could reshape the face of warfare. IDF is constantly working on innovative technology to assist is soldiers in fighting terrorist threats to Israel.
Using the acronym for “digital battle procedure”, “Noked” gives commanders an unprecedented picture of the front lines. In the past the IDF used printed maps, stickers, and markers to identify opposing forces in their battle plans. This new technology may revolutionize the way Israel fights its enemy.
“Noked” creates visual 3-d layers on a screen that IDF commanders can use. All important battle information is overlaid on the digital maps with dynamic feedback. Visual maps can be expanded, panned out, and focused to specific points to improve IDF’s tactical view of area operations. The best feature of the new “Noked” system is its advanced communications. If a IDF unit finds itself in a difficult position, they can use the system to view their surroundings, find a better tactical position and instantly communicate their movement to supporting IDF units. Marked points of suspicious activity can be shared securely enabling IDF commanders to rapidly deploy to the right positions and respond to threats. Terrorist may find themselves unable to match the speed of battlefield deployments as their positions become exposed.
After any battle, the “Noked” system will allow playback so IDF command can learn from the engagement. This level of battlefield insight will improve future confrontation with the enemy as their tactics become exposed through post battle playback. The IDF will be better prepared for each new engagement with the enemy.
This new system once approved and fully implemented will be another tool in the IDF’s arsenal in combating and defeating terrorism.
