Helpful Hints to Know When Your House Is on the Market

Putting your house on the market can make for a hectic life. You need to list your home, find another, and prepare your house for showings. Consider making some updates to your house to improve your odds of selling quickly.

Keep Color Schemes Neutral

The goal of a neutral color scheme is to help potential buyers visualize their belongings in your home. The navy blue accent wall in your dining room may go great with your china, but it could turn off a possible buyer. Use simple tones indoors to serve as a foil for shoppers to imagine themselves living in the house. Tan or cream is a great option with a wood floor. Pale grey tones are also quite popular. Gateway Access recommends that you create a neutral style that doesn’t stand out too much to other houses on the market. A neutral color scheme is more likely to appeal to those who want to buy it.

Depersonalize Your Home

Your personal stamp is probably all over your home. To make the next owner feel that it can be theirs, you need to remove belongings that make it uniquely yours. You’ll need to take down family portraits. In addition, review each room for personal awards or plaques that include a name. Take care to store away your movie and CD collection as well as any gaming toys. Finally, take a good look at your bookshelves. Anything that might be considered offensive or off-color needs to be stored away.

Clean and Declutter

In addition to putting away personal items, it’s a good idea to reduce the contents of your home in general. While you may not want to live in a completely minimalist home, you want to create a sense of fresh air and space. A thorough cleaning of each room from the ceiling fan to baseboards is critical. As you clean, declutter each room, showing the space to be open and tidy. Even better, keeping your home on the market means that you will need to clean up before each showing. The fewer belongings you have to work around, the easier the cleanup will be.

Cleaning and decluttering is a great time to sort your belongings. Depersonalizing your space can be the start of your packing. Creating a calm, neutral color scheme can actually reduce your stress as you work through the challenge of moving.
