As your body ages, your health naturally declines—this decline may be slow or minimal, but it is also basically inevitable! Some of the biggest health issues that aging men face include high blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, and even mental health struggles like depression and anxiety. Being aware of these issues and the ways to treat them can help you feel healthier and happier.
High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is also known as “hypertension”. This condition refers to the pressure one’s blood vessels feel as blood flows through them. This strain on your blood vessels causes a rigidity of the vessels, making it more difficult for blood to flow to the heart. That decrease in blood flow damages your heart; individuals with this condition will feel chest pain, dizziness, and headaches. You can prevent serious damage from occurring by consistently helping your body to circulate blood through exercise. Other natural preventative measures include a low sodium diet, positive stress management, and abstaining from drugs or alcohol.
Erectile Dysfunction
As men’s energy levels decrease and stress levels increase, many find that their libido decreases likewise. Erectile dysfunction or ED is a common issue for aging men— it often coincides with heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and more. This issue can cause major problems with self-esteem, relationship problems, and more. Erectile dysfunction is easily treatable with medications. Additionally, taking care of your cardiovascular health through exercise and refraining from smoking can help prevent this condition from developing.
Depression and Anxiety
One of the biggest growing problems around the world today is the deterioration of mental health. While depression has seen a substantial rise across all ages, genders, and demographics, one of the most significant rises has been in middle aged men. As the body begins to feel more tired and less healthy physically, the mind registers that also. Consistent pain and frustration, magnified by the stress of careers, finances, growing families, and the intimidation of time, often results in a negative self-image which quickly spirals into depressive thoughts or tendencies. If you notice these or other symptoms—including increased irritability, aggression, hopelessness or wandering focus—consider looking into treatments like therapy and take measures to improve your quality of life through physical health efforts and devoting time for your own hobbies or relaxation.
Take care of yourself and your mind, and you can overcome many of the more serious developments that come with the natural, less pleasant impacts of age.
