How to Improve Your Performance When Playing a Competitive Sport

How you perform when playing competitive sports is a big deal. It can impact how much play time you see, who ends up winning, and even your future prospects as a competitive player. It’s important to always strive to improve your performance. So what do you do to improve yourself?

Stay Hydrated and Eat Right

Proper diet and hydration are essential for competitive athletes. Your body needs a good balance of fats, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, and minerals in order to operate at peak performance. Consuming healthy quantities of both micro- and macronutrients will give your body the high quality energy it needs to fuel your performance. Adequate water intake is also essential. Your body can’t function optimally if you are dehydrated. Keep an eye out for signs of hyperthermia as you train and compete, and prevent heat illness by replacing the fluids you’re losing.

Wear Proper Clothing

Wearing appropriate clothing and gear for both your sport and the weather is important to improving your performance as well. Mesh gloves increase breathability in warm and humid weather. Protective gear and padding help protect you from injury, which is critical when you consider that there is no way for you to perform optimally when you are injured. If you are playing in the cold, the proper use of layers can be beneficial. Your first layer should pull moisture away from your body. Your second should insulate you and help you retain body heat. The third layer should provide protection from the wind.

Practice the Way You Want to Compete

In order to compete a certain way, you need to practice that way. It’s along the same lines as the principle of specificity. If you want to be a serious, competitive athlete, you need to train that way. Practice allows you to take the time to really dissect and integrate the various techniques you need to use. Once you get to the competition, there is no more time to think about it. You need to be able to execute. The only way you can do that is by repeatedly practicing what you want to perform until you can do it the way you want to every time without giving it thought.

If you want to improve your performance when playing a competitive sport, there are some things you should be doing. Make sure you stay hydrated and eat a healthy, balanced diet. Wear the right clothing for your sport and the weather. When you practice, take it seriously and practice the way you want to perform. This will help you stay in good shape, be prepared to compete, and elevate your performance.
