What You Should Know About Hearing Aid Technology

Hearing aids have been enhanced over the years with the introduction of new technology and advanced features. The advanced digital hearing aid can offer many more benefits than devices in the years past. There are two types of hearing aid technology: basic and advanced. The type of hearing aid technology is determined by the type of processor. If you are considering hearing aids as a means of improving your hearing, here is what you need to know.

Improving Old Designs

A hearing aid’s basic design consists of four primary components: a processor, microphone, power source and receiver. The microphone receives the sounds from your surroundings and then transmits them to the processor, which amplifies the signal and delivers it to the receiver. The receiver then delivers the enhanced signal to the wearer. The battery or power source fuels the system. One well-known brand is Signia. Signia has a long history, but even the classic designs are being changed thanks to today’s competitive market.

Basic Hearing-Aid Technology

The classic designs include the core, basic hearing technology, which does not offer the benefits of advanced hearing-aid technology. Hearing aids have become a very competitive market due to the introduction of digital technology. Basic hearing-aid technology uses directional microphones, which are intended to improve sounds from all directions. New technology, such as the Bluetooth and Telecoil, do not require the use of a microphone. It features digital noise reduction, which can detect and determine if noise is wanted or unwanted noise. This feature limits background noise and improves your listening pleasure. Basic hearing-aid technology feedback systems can eliminate or reduce whistling created by feedback loops without interrupting the entire system.

Advanced Hearing-Aid Technology

Here are some of the advanced features you can find:

  • Processors: Advanced processors can amplify sounds at a higher frequency and provide a customize frequency response, making the hearing aid more flexible when needed.
  • Apps: Apps features allow the wearer to make adjustments, contact their hearing care provider and monitor the battery life. The app can also route phone calls directly to hearing aids, convert speech to text and translate languages.
  • Artificial intelligence: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a feature that can provide learned preferences, such as your desired volume level in different environments, thereby reducing the need for manual adjustments. Most of these technologies use some form of AI, so this is one of the areas where most of the cutting edge development is happening.
  • Bluetooth technology: Bluetooth, a wireless feature, can enhance the signal ratio and reduce feedback by sending the signal directly to the processor. Bluetooth allows connections to mobile phones and other Bluetooth devices, and it can reduce interference.

Hearing aid technology can be basic or advanced. Basic hearing aid technology represents the four major components of the hearing aid, which includes the processor, microphone, receiver and battery. Advanced hearing aid technology can offer many more benefits, including a high-power processor, an app, Bluetooth technology and AI technology.
